The Adjustable Layer Pillow
One pillow, six removable layers. Build the exact height and feel you want, and change it whenever your sleep changes.
Versalayer Adjustable
Six gel foam layers in three sizes: two 0.75", two 1", and two 1.25". They let you build any height from 0.75" to 6" in precise 0.25" increments. One of the 1" layers is a firmer foam you can reposition in the stack to adjust firmness.
- Made with CertiPUR-US® certified gel memory foam
- 6 layers in 3 sizes - adjustable 0.75" to 6" in 0.25" steps
- 1 firm foam layer - reposition in the stack to adjust firmness
- Removable, machine washable cover
Six layers. Three sizes. 0.25" increments.
Traditional pillows give you one height. Take it or leave it. Versalayer ships with 6 foam layers in three sizes (two 0.75", two 1", two 1.25") so you can build any loft from 0.75" to 6" in precise 0.25" increments. Place the firm 1" layer higher or lower in the stack to fine-tune firmness.
6 layers, 3 sizes, 1 firm
One pillow, every height
Six removable layers: two 0.75", two 1", and two 1.25". They combine into 20 different heights: every quarter-inch step from 0.75" to 5.25", plus the full 6" stack. These are the builds people use most.
| The height | The stack | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| 0.75" | One 0.75" layer | The flattest setup we make, for dedicated stomach sleepers |
| 1.75" | 0.75" + 1" | Stomach sleepers who want a nearly flat build |
| 2.25" | 1" + 1.25" | The in-between build for stomach sleepers, and minimal-loft back sleepers |
| 2.75" | 0.75" + 0.75" + 1.25" | Our best-selling height, rebuilt in layers. Most stomach and back sleepers |
| 3.25" | 0.75" + 1.25" + 1.25" | Back sleepers wanting more support, and low-loft side sleepers |
| 4.0" | 0.75" + 1" + 1" + 1.25" | Side sleepers with narrow shoulders or a soft mattress |
| 6.0" | All six layers | Standard loft, for broad-shouldered side sleepers |
Between those rows sit all the in-between sizes: 1.5", 2", 2.5", 3", and so on, in quarter-inch steps up to 5.25". Every fixed height in our Slim Series lives somewhere in this stack. Adjusting firmness works the same way: the firm 1" layer sits near the top for a firmer feel, lower down for a softer one.
The details
behind the layers
Your height, your way
Six layers in three sizes (0.75", 1", and 1.25") combine to hit any height from 0.75" to 6" in precise 0.25" increments. Stack them all for maximum support, or strip down to just one for a barely-there feel.
Made to sleep cooler
Gel-infused memory foam layers move heat away from your head. Each layer has ventilation channels, so airflow improves no matter how many you stack.
CertiPUR-US® certified foam
Independently tested for content, emissions, and durability.
Easy to keep fresh
The zippered cover is 60% polyester, 40% viscose. It's soft, it breathes, and it goes straight in the washer whenever it needs a refresh.
What is an adjustable layer pillow?
An adjustable layer pillow is exactly what it sounds like. Instead of one fixed slab of foam, a layered pillow is built from flat, removable layers that stack inside the cover. Changing your adjustable pillow height means unzipping the cover and adding or taking out a layer. It takes about ten seconds. You don't buy a new pillow, you rebuild the one you have. The Versalayer ships with six layers, so the same pillow covers 0.75" all the way to 6".
That's not the only way to get adjustable loft. A pillow with adjustable fill uses shredded foam bits, and you change the height by scooping fill in or out through a zipper. It works, but the fill keeps moving after you're done. It shifts under your head and clumps toward the edges during the night, so the loft you built at bedtime isn't always the loft you're sleeping on by morning. Flat layers don't do that. The surface stays even, and the height stays exactly where you set it.
This pillow is for anyone still hunting for their number. If you've bought three pillows and none were right, you can stop guessing and dial it in a quarter inch at a time. It's good for couples who disagree, since two Versalayers can be built two different ways. And it's good if your sleep changes: a new mattress, a sore shoulder, a season of side sleeping instead of back. If you're not sure what height to build first, our thin pillow buying guide and side sleeper guide both walk through it.
If you already know your preferred loft, we have simpler options.

Common questions
Each Versalayer comes with 6 gel foam layers in three sizes: two 0.75", two 1", and two 1.25". Unzip the cover, add or remove layers to go from 0.75" (one layer) up to 6" (all layers) in precise 0.25" increments. One of the 1" layers is a firmer foam. Move it higher or lower in the stack to adjust firmness.
The layers combine into 20 heights: every quarter-inch step from 0.75" to 5.25", plus the full 6" stack with all six layers. That covers every fixed height we sell in the Slim Series, 1.75" through 4.0", and all the in-between sizes like 2" and 3" that no fixed pillow offers. Most people land within a quarter inch of their perfect height in the first few nights.
Shredded pillows adjust by scooping loose fill in and out, and the fill keeps moving after that. It can shift and clump during the night, so the height slowly changes under you. The Versalayer uses flat, solid layers instead. The surface stays even, the height stays exact, and changing it back takes seconds.
Side sleepers should start with all six layers and remove one at a time until your head rests level with your spine. Stomach and back sleepers can start near our best-selling 2.75" height by stacking a 0.75", a 0.75", and a 1.25", then adjust a quarter inch at a time from there. Give each change a night or two before judging it.
No. The layers nest inside the zippered cover and stay in place. The cover holds everything snug. They won't slide around during the night.
Our standard sized pillows are 25 inches long and 16 inches wide. Our king sized pillows are 33 inches long and 16 inches wide. They will fit in regular standard and king sized pillowcases. Due to the adjustable loft, the pillow's thickness will vary depending on how many layers you use, but the footprint stays the same and fits normal pillowcases just fine.
The Slim Series is ideal if you already know your preferred height. The Versalayer is designed for people who want control. Adjust your loft and firmness until it's exactly right. Need a higher or lower pillow later? An easy fix.
Like any new memory foam product, there may be a faint smell when first unboxed. It's harmless and typically fades within a few hours. Our foam is CertiPUR-US® certified, meaning it's tested for low VOC emissions.
30-day money back through Amazon, no questions asked. With 6 layers in 3 sizes plus a firmness layer, you'll have plenty of combinations to try. Most customers settle on their setup quickly.
Absolutely. The Versalayer is one of the best options for side sleepers because it adjusts from 0.75" all the way up to 6". Side sleepers generally need more loft than stomach or back sleepers to fill the gap between their shoulder and head. With the Versalayer, you can stack as many or as few layers as you need to find the right height for your build and sleep position.
CertiPUR-US® is an independent certification program that tests foam for harmful chemicals, heavy metals, and excessive VOC (volatile organic compound) emissions. All Bluewave Bedding pillows are made with CertiPUR-US® certified foam, which means the memory foam has been tested and verified to meet standards for content, emissions, and durability.
The memory foam layers should not be machine washed or submerged in water, as it can damage their structure. If a layer needs cleaning, spot clean it with a damp cloth and mild detergent, then let it air dry completely. The removable pillow cover, however, is fully machine washable. Just unzip it, toss it in on a gentle cycle, and tumble dry on low heat. We recommend washing the cover every few weeks to keep things fresh.
With proper care, a quality memory foam pillow can last anywhere from 2 to 5 years. Over time, all pillows gradually lose some of their original support. A simple test: fold a layer in half and let go. If it springs back to its original shape, it still has life left. If it stays folded or returns slowly, it may be time for a replacement. Our gel-infused memory foam is designed for durability, but like any pillow, it won't last forever.
Yes, this is completely normal. Memory foam responds to temperature, so brand-new layers that have been compressed in packaging may feel firmer than expected for the first 24 to 48 hours as they adjust to room temperature and fully expand. You can speed up the process by gently kneading the layers, placing them in a warm room, or even running them through a low-heat dryer cycle for a few minutes. After a night or two of use, most customers find the foam softens to its intended feel. For more tips, see our pillow expansion guide.
