How Thick Should Your Pillow Be?

Walk into any store and the pillows on the shelf run 5 to 7 inches thick. Nobody puts that number on the tag, and nobody tells you it matters more than the fill, the brand, or the price. Thickness is what decides if your head rests level with your spine or spends the night propped up. The honest answer to "how thick should a pillow be" starts with two things: the position you sleep in and the size of your frame. Face down on your stomach needs almost nothing. Broad shoulders on your side need real height. This page walks every height we make, from a single 0.75" layer to the full 6" stack, so you can find your number instead of guessing at it.

Where we stand. Bluewave makes thin pillows, so the picks on this page are ours. The heights and the reasoning behind them hold up no matter whose pillow you buy, and there are 9,000+ Amazon reviews you can check our claims against.

Start with how you sleep

Position sets your range. Your build and how soft your mattress is nudge you up or down inside it.

How you sleep Height range
Stomach 1.75" to 2.75", by body size
Stomach and back mix 2.25" to 2.75"
Arm tucked under the pillow 2.25" to 2.75"
Back 2.25" to 3.25", most land at 2.75"
Side, narrow shoulders or a soft mattress 3.25" to 4.0"
Side, broad shoulders 4.0" or taller

Every thickness, 0.75" to 6"

People search for a 2 inch pillow or a 3 inch pillow and get listings that round to the nearest inch. Ours are exact. Here is every one of them, in order.

Thickness What it is Get it with
0.75" A single thin layer, about as low as padding gets Versalayer, one 0.75" layer
1" One firm or medium layer on its own Versalayer, one 1" layer
1.25" The thickest single layer we make Versalayer, one 1.25" layer
1.5" The flattest true pillow height Versalayer build
1.75" Our flattest fixed pillow Extra Slim, or a Versalayer build
2" The classic “2 inch pillow” no fixed model matches exactly Versalayer build
2.25" The in-between fixed height Hyper Slim, or a Versalayer build
2.5" Halfway point many stomach sleepers land on Versalayer build
2.75" Our best-selling height Ultra Slim, or a Versalayer build
3" An exact 3" that fixed pillows skip Versalayer build
3.25" The most neck support in a fixed thin pillow Super Slim, or a Versalayer build
3.5" to 3.75" The step up toward side-sleeper territory Versalayer builds
4" Our tallest fixed pillow Slim 4.0", or a Versalayer build
4.25" to 4.75" Side-sleeper heights for average builds Versalayer builds
5" to 5.25" Side-sleeper heights for broader shoulders Versalayer builds
6" Standard store-pillow loft, the full stack Versalayer, all six layers

Between 5.25" and 6" the stack jumps: the layers can't add up to 5.5" or 5.75", so the next stop after 5.25" is the full 6". The four fixed heights up to 3.25" also come in Max Cool cooling versions.

What a 0.75", 1", or 1.25" layer is actually for

Those three numbers are the layer heights inside a Versalayer. Two layers are 0.75", two are 1", and two are 1.25", and one of the 1" layers is a firmer foam. On its own, a single layer is thinner than the thinnest pillow most stores stock. A 1 inch pillow sounds impossibly low until you picture a face-down sleeper trying to breathe over a 6 inch one.

As a pillow, one layer suits a dedicated stomach sleeper who wants their head as close to flat as it will get. That is a small group. Most people stack two or three layers and stop there.

The layers also earn their keep away from your head. Slide one under a pillow that turned out a touch too low and you gain up to an inch and a quarter without buying anything else. Stomach sleepers can put a thin layer under the hips to take pressure off the lower back, which we cover in the stomach sleeper guide. Back sleepers can tuck one under the knees. Off the bed, a layer works as a seat or bench cushion, as travel padding, or as lumbar support behind an office chair. All six layers come inside the Versalayer, so you have them either way.

Bluewave Ultra Slim 2.75 inch thin gel memory foam pillow
Best overall

Ultra Slim 2.75"

The 2.75" height is our best seller and our least returned, which is the strongest signal we have. It sits in the middle of the back sleeper range and at the top of the stomach sleeper range, so it covers both on the nights you switch. Solid gel memory foam, cut to one exact height.

Every other size

Versalayer 0.75" to 6"

The only way to get an exact 2", 2.5", 3", or anything past 4". Six removable layers build every quarter inch from 0.75" to 5.25", plus the full 6" stack. It is our premium pillow and the one model that suits every sleep position, so it is the pick when you would rather test a height than guess at it.

Bluewave Extra Slim 1.75 inch ultra thin memory foam pillow
Flattest fixed pillow

Extra Slim 1.75"

At 1.75" this is the lowest fixed height we cut, and it lies almost flat under your head. It is built for people who sleep face down nearly every night and want nothing lifting the neck. Too low for most back sleepers and well below what a side sleeper needs, so pick it on purpose.

Bluewave Slim 4 inch low profile memory foam pillow
Tallest fixed pillow

Slim 4.0"

Four inches is the top of the Slim Series and the only fixed height we would hand a side sleeper. It fits narrow shoulders, a softer mattress, or anyone who likes a lower feel on their side. Broad shoulders usually need more than this, and that is where the taller Versalayer builds come in.

Thickness questions, answered

Most pillows sold in stores land between 5 and 7 inches thick. That height exists because the standard pillow is built for a side sleeper, who has a shoulder-sized gap to fill between the ear and the mattress. If you sleep on your stomach or your back, the same pillow tips your head forward and holds it there for hours. Stomach and back sleepers usually do better somewhere between 1.75" and 3.25", which is a long way below the shelf average.

Lay the pillow flat on a hard surface, leave it unpressed, and measure straight up at the center, where your head actually goes. Measuring at the edge or with a hand resting on top will read low. Solid foam gives you the same number every time, because it was cut to a height and it holds that height. Shredded fill and down are a different story. The reading changes with how recently the pillow was fluffed, so treat any number on that kind of label as an average.

No. Loft is a fit measurement, closer to a shoe size than a grade. A 6" pillow is not a better pillow than a 2.75" one, and a thin pillow is not a stripped-down version of a tall one. Quality shows up in the foam, the certification behind it, and how well the pillow holds its shape after a year of nights. Ours are CertiPUR-US® certified and cut from solid foam. The useful question is which thickness matches your sleep position and your build.

That is what the Versalayer is for. Its six layers stack into every quarter-inch step from 0.75" to 5.25", plus the full 6" stack, so a 2.5" build is one 1" layer with two 0.75" layers on top of it. Our fixed pillows come in five heights: 1.75", 2.25", 2.75", 3.25", and 4.0". If your number sits between two of those, or you expect it to move later, the adjustable pillow is the straight answer.

Plenty, once it leaves the pillowcase. A single layer can sit under a pillow that ends up a touch too low, under the hips for a stomach sleeper, or under the knees for a back sleeper. Away from the bed it works as a seat or bench cushion, as padding in a suitcase, or as lumbar support behind an office chair. We do not sell the layers on their own. All six come inside the Versalayer, so buying the pillow is how you get them.
