Thin Cooling Pillows for Hot Sleepers

For stomach and back sleepers, we recommend starting with our 2.75" Ultra Slim model. It is our most popular and least-returned model. For many customers, the 2.75" height is the sweet spot: enough support to hold the neck, low enough to stay aligned. Side sleepers with narrow shoulders or a soft mattress can try our 3.25" height. Broad-shouldered side sleepers usually need more than Max Cool offers, and the Versalayer covers that. All four heights have the same gel-infused memory foam with CarbonBlue™ phase-change coating.

The difference is the foam: Max Cool uses the same gel-infused memory foam coated with CarbonBlue™ phase-change material that soaks up body heat as you fall asleep (advanced cooling). Slim Series uses gel-infused memory foam with ventilation channels (good cooling at a lower price). If you tend to sleep hot, many customers find the Max Cool makes a noticeable difference. Usually, yes. Foam holds heat, so a 6" pillow has a lot more material under your head trapping warmth than a 2.75" one does. Starting thin removes heat before any cooling material gets involved. Add the CarbonBlue phase-change layer on top and you get a pillow that stores less heat and soaks up a burst of what does build as you settle in. Our standard sized pillows are 25 inches long and 16 inches wide. They will fit in regular standard sized pillowcases. Due to their low loft, there might be some extra room in the pillowcase, but we very rarely hear complaints about the pillows fitting in normal pillowcases.

Like any new memory foam product, there may be a faint smell when first unboxed. It's harmless and typically fades within a few hours. Our foam is CertiPUR-US® certified, meaning it's tested for low VOC emissions.

Many cooling pillows use a gel layer that feels cool at first but warms up within an hour or two. Our CarbonBlue phase-change coating absorbs heat when you first lie down, which is when cooling matters most for falling asleep. If the spot under your head warms up later, moving to a fresh part of the pillow starts the cooling again. The CarbonBlue material is also breathable and doesn't add a hard gel layer that changes the feel of the foam. The pillow keeps the same soft, supportive memory foam feel.

Gel-infused pillows mix gel beads or a gel layer into the foam to draw heat away from your head. This can feel cool at first, but the gel typically warms up within an hour or two and can also make the pillow feel firmer or less responsive. Phase-change materials work differently: they absorb and store heat, so the surface starts cooler and stays comfortable while you fall asleep. On our Max Cool pillows, CarbonBlue is a thin phase-change coating applied to one side of the foam, so it doesn't change the softness or firmness of the memory foam underneath. The cool-to-the-touch nylon and polyethylene cover adds a second layer of cooling on top.

CertiPUR-US® is an independent certification program that tests foam for harmful chemicals, heavy metals, and excessive VOC (volatile organic compound) emissions. All Bluewave Bedding pillows are made with CertiPUR-US® certified foam, which means the memory foam has been tested and verified to meet standards for content, emissions, and durability.

The memory foam itself should not be machine washed or submerged in water, as it can damage the foam's structure. If the foam needs cleaning, spot clean it with a damp cloth and mild detergent, then let it air dry completely. The removable pillow cover, however, is fully machine washable. Just unzip it, toss it in on a gentle cycle, and tumble dry on low heat. We recommend washing the cover every few weeks to keep things fresh.

With proper care, a quality memory foam pillow can last anywhere from 2 to 5 years. Over time, all pillows gradually lose some of their original support. A simple test: fold your pillow in half and let go. If it springs back to its original shape, it still has life left. If it stays folded or returns slowly, it may be time for a replacement. Memory foam responds to temperature, so a brand-new pillow that's been compressed in packaging may feel firmer than expected for the first 24 to 48 hours as it adjusts to room temperature and fully expands. You can speed up the process by gently kneading the pillow, placing it in a warm room, or even running it through a low-heat dryer cycle for a few minutes. After a night or two of use, most customers find the foam softens to its intended feel.
