The Best Thin Pillows for Every Sleep Position

Most pillows in stores are 5 to 7 inches thick, and that height is built for one kind of sleeper: the person on their side who needs to fill the gap between shoulder and ear. If you sleep on your stomach or your back, or you keep waking up with a stiff neck, a thinner pillow may be the fix. Less loft lets your head rest closer to level with your spine instead of getting propped up all night. This guide walks through how to pick the right one, starting with your sleep position and working down to height, firmness, and how cool you need it to sleep.

Where we stand. Bluewave makes thin pillows, so of course the picks below are ours. The how-to-choose advice holds no matter whose pillow you end up buying, and there are 9,000+ Amazon reviews you can check our claims against.

How to choose a thin pillow

Four decisions, in this order. Get the first one right and the rest fall into place.

1

Start with sleep position

Position drives everything else. Stomach sleepers need the least height, since a tall pillow pushes the head back and the neck holds that angle for hours. Back sleepers need a little more. Side sleepers need the most, because there is a shoulder-sized gap to fill. Pick the position you spend most of the night in.

2

Pick a height

Loft is the number that matters once you know your position. Solid one-piece foam holds an exact height, so a 2.75" pillow stays 2.75" every night. Shredded fill and down shift every time you fluff them, which means the loft you get tonight may not be the loft you get tomorrow.

3

Decide on firmness

Thin works best when it is supportive. A pillow that is thin and soft bottoms out under the weight of your head, and you end up with almost nothing between your ear and the mattress. Medium firm foam gives where your head presses and holds steady everywhere else.

4

Think about temperature

Gel infusion and ventilation channels handle heat for most people, and a thin pillow already traps less warmth than a tall one. If you sleep hot and spend the night flipping to the cool side, look for a phase-change coating. It absorbs heat directly rather than waiting on airflow.

Which height for which sleeper

How you sleep Height range Why
Stomach 1.75" to 2.75" Keeps the head near the mattress so the neck is not craned upward
Back 2.25" to 3.25" Supports the neck without tipping the chin toward the chest
Stomach and back mix, or arm under pillow 2.25" to 2.75" Covers both positions, with enough thickness to cushion a tucked arm
Side, low-loft preference 3.25" to 4.0" The top of the thin range, for narrow shoulders or a lower feel
Can't decide or multiple positions Adjustable, 0.75" to 6" Add or remove layers until you land on your number

These are starting points, not rules. The best low profile pillow for you is the one on your row, nudged up or down for your build and how firm your mattress is. Everything we sell comes with 30-day returns through Amazon, so a first guess is never a permanent one.

Our picks, by sleeper

The best thin memory foam pillow is the one that matches how you sleep, so find your position below. All six are made with CertiPUR-US® certified foam. The short version: most people should start with the Ultra Slim 2.75", and the Versalayer is the premium way to stop guessing.

Bluewave Ultra Slim 2.75 inch thin gel memory foam pillow
Best overall

Ultra Slim 2.75"

The 2.75" height is our most popular and our least returned, and versatility is the reason it sits at the top. It fits the widest range of stomach and back sleepers, so if you are not sure where you land, start here. Solid gel memory foam at a medium firm feel.

Bluewave Versalayer adjustable height memory foam pillow
Best adjustable

Versalayer 0.75" to 6"

Six foam layers you add or remove to land anywhere from 0.75" to 6", in 0.25" steps. It is our premium option, and the one pillow we make that suits every sleep position. This is the pick for people who do not know their height yet, or for a bed where two people want different things. Buy it once, test your way to a number, and stop guessing.

Bluewave Max Cool 2.75 inch thin cooling memory foam pillow
Best cooling

Max Cool 2.75"

The same 2.75" height as our best seller, with a CarbonBlue™ phase-change coating on the foam. The coating absorbs heat as your head warms the surface instead of relying on airflow alone. If running hot is the thing keeping you up, this is the best thin cooling pillow we make.

from $49.99
Bluewave Super Slim 3.25 inch low profile memory foam pillow
Best for back sleepers

Super Slim 3.25"

Back sleepers often want a bit more under the head than stomach sleepers do, without going back to a pillow that tips the chin toward the chest. At 3.25" this adds neck support and stops there. It also suits narrow-shouldered side sleepers who find 4" a touch too tall. More in our back sleeper guide.

$44.99
Bluewave Slim 4 inch low profile memory foam pillow
Best for side sleepers

Slim 4.0"

The tallest pillow in the Slim Series, and the only one we would put in front of a side sleeper. It suits people with narrower shoulders or a low-loft preference. If you have broad shoulders and sleep strictly on your side, we will be straight with you: 4" will probably still be too low. The Versalayer stacks to 6" if that is you. More in our side sleeper guide.

$44.99
Bluewave Extra Slim 1.75 inch ultra thin memory foam pillow
Best for stomach sleepers

Extra Slim 1.75"

At 1.75" this is the thinnest pillow we make, and the best ultra thin pillow we can offer a dedicated stomach sleeper. It sits nearly flat: head close to the mattress, neck not craned up. It is too low for almost everyone else, so choose it only if you spend the night face down. More in our stomach sleeper guide.

When a thin pillow isn't the answer

A low profile pillow is not right for everybody, and we would rather say that here than read it in a return note. We have sold 350,000+ pillows, so we have seen who this works for and who it does not.

The first group is broad-shouldered people who sleep strictly on their side. There is a real gap between your shoulder and your ear, and filling it usually takes 4" of loft or more. Go thin and your head tilts down toward the mattress all night, which is its own kind of sore morning.

The second group is people who love sinking into a tall, fluffy pillow. That is a preference, not a mistake, and no amount of alignment talk will convert them. If that is you, a standard-loft pillow is the better buy, from us or from anyone else.

If you are somewhere in between and honestly torn, the adjustable Versalayer settles it. Start tall, pull a layer, sleep on it, repeat until it feels right.

Thin pillow questions, answered

Most stomach sleepers do best somewhere between 1.75" and 2.75". Our Ultra Slim at 2.75" is the safer place to start, because it still works on the nights you roll onto your back. If you sleep face down almost every night and want your head as close to the mattress as it will get, the Extra Slim at 1.75" is the one to try. Both are cut from a single piece of gel memory foam, so the height you order is the height you get.

Solid foam pillows bottom out at around 1.75", which is where our Extra Slim sits. Go much below that and there is not enough foam left to hold up the weight of a head, so the pillow squashes flat under you. Layered adjustable pillows can go lower, because you take material out instead of compressing it. Our Versalayer drops to 0.75" with one layer left in the cover, and nothing in our lineup goes lower.

For most side sleepers, no. Lying on your side leaves a shoulder-sized gap between your head and the mattress, and a flat pillow lets your neck bend down into it. Side sleepers with narrow shoulders, or anyone who simply prefers a lower feel, often do fine on our 3.25" or 4.0" heights. Broad-shouldered side sleepers usually need more than 4". Our fixed heights stop there, but the Versalayer stacks up to 6" when you need extra height. If you sleep on your side some nights and your stomach on others, the adjustable Versalayer covers both.

Look for gel-infused foam with ventilation channels, and add a phase-change coating if you run really hot. The gel and the channels move heat away using airflow, which is enough for most people. Phase-change material goes a step further and absorbs heat directly as it builds. Our Max Cool line puts a CarbonBlue phase-change coating over the same gel memory foam we use in the Slim Series, at the same heights. A thin pillow already sleeps cooler than a tall one, since there is less foam under you holding warmth.

It may. A pillow that sits too tall holds your neck at an angle all night, and many sleepers find that lowering the loft eases the stiffness they wake up with. That is common feedback across our 9,000+ Amazon reviews, and it is why a lot of people go looking for a thin pillow in the first place. We make pillows, though. We are not a medical company. If your neck pain is persistent or severe, please check with a doctor before assuming your bedding is the cause.

It depends on how you sleep. Stomach sleepers usually land between 1.75" and 2.75". Back sleepers do well from 2.25" to 3.25". If you switch between stomach and back through the night, or sleep with an arm tucked under the pillow, 2.25" to 2.75" covers both jobs, thick enough to cushion the arm while it adds a little height of its own. Mixes that include side sleeping run taller, closer to 2.75" to 3.25". Side sleepers who prefer a low loft can go 3.25" to 4.0". If none of that describes you cleanly, an adjustable pillow lets you dial in the number yourself.

Solid foam holds its cut height far better than shredded fill or down, which pack down and need fluffing to come back. A one-piece gel memory foam pillow keeps the shape it was cut to for years. Every pillow wears out eventually, and 2 to 5 years is a fair lifespan with normal use. A new pillow arrives vacuum packed and can look thin on day one. Give it 24 to 48 hours, or see our pillow expansion guide if it needs a nudge.
